Creative Thinking Life Skill

The trainers of creative thinking implement various techniques to infuse the art of thinking in a unique way. They are the ones who come in close proximity to the students to inform them of the different changes taking place in the world scenario and ask them to come up with creative ideas. Trainers often utilize the drop box strategy to teach students. According to this style, students have to drop chits of paper with their own ideas into the box. The ideas can vary from solutions of problems to innovative game ideas.

Meaning of Creative Thinking

Creative thinking is a playful and relaxed version of critical thinking. It involves taking risks and looking for many solutions instead of one. When you think creatively, you are allowed to make mistakes and even come up with solutions that might sound silly. When you are on your way to create an idea, you tend to keep in account everything that strikes your mind. Last, but not the least you evaluate and finally learn from the mistakes that you had committed earlier.

Relation with Confidence and Motivation

On one hand, when you are motivated, your confidence automatically boosts you. On the other hand, confidence is the incentive for motivation. This means that creative thinking is interlinked with both confidence and motivation.

Creative thinking comes from self-reliance. When you know the resources you possess, you are automatically equipped with confidence. Your resources might be your expertise on a subject, your intelligence, good experience to handle a situation or even your belief in yourself.

Stages of Creative Thinking

Creative thinking skills are widely divided into four stages. They are as follows.

# Preparation - This is the stage when you gather more information about the issue at hand than you already possess. Also called the conscious state, here you can read, talk to others and accumulate your past experience. All of these are going to help you solve the problem. The time consumed in this stage may vary from some minutes to a year or even more.

For instance, when I sat down to write a book for the first time, I gathered all information about the topic at hand. It took me almost six months to accumulate ideas from books, by conversing with others and ransacking my memory.

# Incubation - This state is called the subconscious state. This is the phase where you need to stop thinking of the issue. You can distract yourself by watching a movie, listening to music, going for a walk, playing with kids, etc. This indicates the fact that you should do anything, which keeps your mind busy, and you are not reminded of the problem at hand. Your subconscious mind digests all the information collected in the last stage. This is similar to the process used to remove “writers block.”

The duration of this stage can vary from some minutes to a year or two. For instance, while penning down a book, I give a gap of around a month between two writing phases.

Once, the incubation period is over and the subconscious mind digests the information collected, get back to the issue and start designing an idea. By the end of the incubation stage, the idea is at a more pronounced condition than it was initially. Sometimes, you might observe the preparation and incubation phase overlapping with each other. However, that does not create any problem in the process of creative thinking.

# Illumination - This is the stage of enlightenment. The solution that was in the incubation form begins to have a definite framework. This is the sudden moment that emerges when you strike a sliver of idea amidst a lot of confusion. The solution offers a feeling of conviction. You must have experienced a situation when you suddenly smiled to yourself or jumped up with a shout of joy. This is the illumination stage.

Once while writing a book, I was in a confused state. I could not understand what to write next. Several ideas were clamoring in my mind. Suddenly, I saw my wife bringing in a cup of coffee and voila! I had my idea. In a matter of seconds, the answer stared me in the face.

# Verification - This is the phase where you verify the idea that struck you in the enlightenment stage. You challenge the idea and try to find out mistakes in it. You have to revise the idea thoroughly and make required changes to suit the situation. When I had my set of ideas, I went through them to see if they were at all related to the matter, which I was writing about. I had to remove some points and add others. After a considerable span of time, I finished the book.

Things to Remember

When you are trying to think creatively, remember two prime points.

1. Do not stop

You might think you have reached a good point. But, do not stop there. Keep thinking as long as you have time. Keep exploring newer ideas or even explore the solution you had struck earlier. Do not worry if the idea gets extended to the point of stupidity. Carry on and see where it takes you.

It does not matter if you cross the boundary of genius and reach the territory of insanity. Several scientists are called crazy men. However, they make their trip back to the domain of genius and prove their point.

2. Stay with the flow

There are times when the thought you had initially considered completely useless, turns out to be the most useful result. So, you should stay with the flow when they come. Do not stop ideas midway just because you feel that they do not fit the situation. Let the ideas come and see what comes about.
